GREEN TIP
(Brought to you by the MdTL Green Committee)
Did you know that MdTL just received a generous donation of organic Heirloom Tomato seeds from Gary Ibsen, Founder of the Carmel TomatoFest, to help our community get involved in growing our own food? The MdTL Green Committee will be giving out tomato starter plants to interested families during Earth Week!
Tips about home-grown Heirloom Tomatoes:
*An heirloom is generally considered to be a variety that has been passed down, through several generations of a family because of it's valued characteristics such as taste, resistance to pests and diseases and adaptations to specific growing conditions and climates
*In the past 40 years, we've lost many of our heirloom varieties, along with the many smaller family farms that supported heirlooms
* Tomatoes are high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, Potassium and tomatoes are one of the best sources for Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant which may help prevent prostate and some other forms of cancer, heart disease, and other serious diseases
*Having your kids eat tomatoes right off the vine - when they’re at their sweetest - is a great way to get kids hooked on this versatile, nutritional staple!
